3D Secure is an extra safety protocol that protects online debit and credit card payments from fraud. It adds a verification step before a purchase is approved. 3D stands for "Three-Domain Secure" which refers to the connection of the three parts: our online store, your bank and the payment network.
Visa's version of 3D secure is referred to as "Visa Secure" and MasterCard call theirs "Mastercard Identity Check".
When you enter your card details into our payment page, a new screen appears from your bank asking you to prove who you are. You will often be required to open your online banking app to 'approve' the transaction or you will be sent a one-time code to your phone to enter on the screen. Once this check has been passed, payment is authorised.
If you are unable to pass this check for whatever reason, payment will not be taken and the order will not complete.
